Learn more about choosing LED & camping lanterns
Lanterns provide broad-area illumination rather than the more concentrated beam typically produced by a flashlight or spotlight. Portable LED lanterns are useful around campsites, hunting camps, emergency shelters, workshops, vehicles, patios, tents, and during temporary power outages.
LED Lanterns
LED lanterns use efficient solid-state light sources and are available in compact, full-size, rechargeable, battery-powered, and multi-function designs. LED technology can provide substantial runtime and brightness with relatively low power consumption.
Camping Lanterns
Camping lanterns are designed to illuminate tents, tables, cooking areas, campsites, and other nearby spaces. Important considerations include brightness, usable runtime, weight, weather resistance, hanging options, and the type of batteries or charging system required.
Rechargeable Lanterns
Rechargeable lanterns may use integrated batteries, removable rechargeable cells, USB charging, USB-C charging, solar charging, or manufacturer-specific charging systems. Some models can also provide USB power for compatible portable devices.
Choosing a Lantern
- Brightness: Compare lumen output and how evenly the lantern distributes light throughout the surrounding area.
- Runtime: Review operating time at the brightness levels most likely to be used rather than maximum output alone.
- Power Source: Consider replaceable batteries, rechargeable batteries, integrated power systems, and available charging methods.
- Portability: Evaluate size, weight, handles, hooks, folding components, and packing requirements for the intended use.
Area Lighting
Unlike a focused flashlight, a lantern is intended to illuminate a surrounding area. Diffusers, reflector design, emitter placement, and housing shape influence how evenly the light spreads around a campsite, room, or work area.
Multiple Brightness Modes
Many lanterns include high, medium, and low output settings. Lower settings can extend battery runtime and reduce glare, while higher output can provide additional illumination when lighting a larger space.
Emergency & Power-Outage Lighting
Lanterns can be useful for emergency preparedness because they provide hands-free area lighting during power outages and other situations where normal lighting is unavailable. Simple controls, long battery life, durable construction, and easily stored power sources can be particularly useful for emergency kits.
Battery-Powered Lanterns
Models using replaceable batteries can be useful where electrical charging is unavailable. Battery shelf life, availability, temperature performance, storage conditions, and expected runtime should be considered for long-term preparedness use.
USB & Rechargeable Power
USB-rechargeable lanterns can often be charged from wall adapters, portable power banks, vehicle adapters, or compatible portable power stations. Verify charging voltage, connector type, and manufacturer requirements for the specific lantern.
Hanging Hooks & Carry Handles
Lanterns may include folding handles, carabiner-style hooks, magnets, hanging loops, tripod interfaces, or other features that allow the light to be positioned around tents, vehicles, workspaces, shelters, and campsites.
Weather Resistance
Outdoor lanterns may be exposed to rain, dust, temperature changes, and repeated transport. Review manufacturer specifications for water resistance, dust protection, operating temperature, housing construction, and impact resistance.
Compact & Collapsible Lanterns
Compact or collapsible lanterns reduce storage space and can be useful in backpacks, emergency kits, range bags, and vehicles. Smaller designs may trade maximum brightness or battery capacity for reduced size and weight.
Lanterns for Hunting & Camp Use
Hunters and campers may use lanterns for camp setup, equipment organization, cooking areas, shelters, and general nighttime activities. Desired brightness, portability, battery life, and weather resistance depend on trip length and field conditions.
Care & Storage
Keep lenses, diffusers, switches, charging ports, battery compartments, handles, hooks, and electrical contacts clean and dry. Follow manufacturer instructions for charging and long-term battery storage, and periodically inspect emergency lanterns to confirm that batteries and controls remain serviceable.
