Learn more about plate carriers, tactical vests & load-bearing gear

Plate carriers and tactical vests provide wearable platforms for carrying compatible protective inserts, magazines, medical gear, communication equipment, utility pouches, hydration components, and other equipment. Designs vary widely in size, construction, attachment system, adjustability, coverage, and intended use.

Plate Carriers

Plate carriers are designed around specific plate dimensions and carrier sizes. Some models provide front and rear plate pockets, side-plate options, modular cummerbunds, removable placards, shoulder padding, and MOLLE-compatible attachment surfaces.

Tactical Vests

Tactical vests may provide integrated storage, modular attachment areas, adjustable shoulder and waist systems, utility pockets, magazine storage, or other load-bearing features. Not every tactical vest is designed to carry armor plates.

Chest Rigs

Chest rigs are generally designed as load-bearing equipment platforms rather than armor carriers. They may include integrated magazine pouches, modular placards, MOLLE webbing, utility compartments, shoulder harnesses, and adjustable waist straps.

Choosing a Plate Carrier or Vest

  • Carrier Size: Follow the manufacturer's sizing information rather than assuming clothing size determines carrier size.
  • Plate Compatibility: Confirm the supported plate dimensions, shape, thickness, and cut for the exact carrier.
  • Adjustment Range: Compare shoulder straps, cummerbund adjustment, waist range, and overall fit system.
  • Attachment Space: Consider available MOLLE, hook-and-loop, placard, buckle, and accessory attachment areas.

Plate Size & Carrier Compatibility

Plate carrier sizing is commonly based on the protective plate the carrier is designed to hold, not simply the wearer's clothing size. Plate width, height, thickness, curvature, and cut may affect compatibility.

Plate Cuts

Protective plates may be produced in different shapes or cuts, including rectangular, shooter-style, swimmer-style, or other configurations. Carrier pockets should be matched to the exact plate dimensions and shape specified by the manufacturer.

Cummerbunds

A cummerbund wraps around the sides of many plate carriers and can provide adjustment, side support, modular attachment space, or pockets for compatible equipment. Designs may use elastic, MOLLE webbing, rigid reinforcement, hook-and-loop, buckles, tubes, or other closure systems.

Placards & Front Panels

Modular placards and front panels can provide removable storage or attachment platforms for compatible carriers. Common interfaces can include hook-and-loop surfaces, buckles, clips, MOLLE webbing, or manufacturer-specific attachment systems.

MOLLE Attachment

MOLLE-compatible carriers and vests provide webbing or laser-cut attachment areas for compatible pouches and accessories. Available mounting space varies by carrier size, panel design, cummerbund, and existing equipment.

Magazine & Utility Pouches

Plate carriers, vests, and chest rigs may accept compatible magazine pouches, medical pouches, admin pouches, utility pouches, radio pouches, and hydration accessories. Confirm the attachment method and available panel space before selecting accessories.

Shoulder Straps & Padding

Shoulder straps may be fixed, adjustable, padded, low-profile, or removable depending on the carrier. Strap width and padding can influence comfort and compatibility with packs or other gear.

Quick-Release Systems

Some carriers use quick-release buckles, tubes, cables, or other release systems at the shoulder or cummerbund. Designs differ substantially, so replacement or upgrade components should be verified for the specific carrier.

Ventilation & Padding

Mesh panels, spacer materials, foam padding, channels, and other construction features may be used to improve airflow or separate portions of the carrier from the body.

Materials & Construction

Load-bearing equipment may use woven nylon, laminate, mesh, elastic, polymer hardware, metal hardware, hook-and-loop material, and reinforced stitching. Construction affects weight, flexibility, abrasion resistance, and durability.

Hydration Compatibility

Some carriers and vests provide rear MOLLE panels, routing loops, or dedicated attachment points for compatible hydration carriers and tubing. Check the specific carrier and hydration system before combining components.

Color & Camouflage Options

Plate carriers, tactical vests, chest rigs, and accessories are available in a range of solid colors and camouflage patterns. Availability varies by manufacturer and product configuration.

Carrier vs. Armor Rating

A plate carrier by itself is generally a textile or load-bearing platform. Any protective capability depends on the specific armor or protective inserts used with it. Always rely on the armor manufacturer's stated rating, testing information, and compatibility requirements rather than the carrier alone.

Inspection & Care

Periodically inspect stitching, webbing, buckles, shoulder straps, cummerbunds, hook-and-loop surfaces, zippers, attachment hardware, plate pockets, and accessory interfaces for wear or damage. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning, storage, adjustment, and replacement.
