What Is an LPVO?

An LPVO is a variable-power riflescope with a relatively low starting magnification. Common magnification ranges include 1-4x, 1-6x, 1-8x, and 1-10x. At the low end, the optic provides a wide field of view, while higher magnification provides greater target detail.

1-6x LPVO Scopes

Choosing an LPVO

• Magnification Range: Choose a range appropriate for expected shooting distances, target size, and intended use.
• Reticle: Compare simple illuminated aiming points, BDC reticles, ranging reticles, and more detailed tactical or hunting designs.
• Focal Plane: Determine whether a first focal plane or second focal plane reticle better matches the intended use.
• Mounting: Verify tube diameter, mount height, ring spacing, rail compatibility, and available mounting space.

First Focal Plane vs. Second Focal Plane

In a first focal plane LPVO, the apparent reticle size changes as magnification changes, allowing compatible reticle measurements to remain proportional throughout the magnification range. In a second focal plane optic, the reticle appears the same size as magnification changes and subtensions are normally calibrated at a specified magnification.

Illuminated LPVO Reticles

Many LPVO scopes use illuminated center dots, circles, horseshoes, or other aiming elements to increase reticle visibility in different lighting conditions. Compare brightness settings, illumination controls, battery type, and manufacturer runtime specifications.

Field of View & Eye Relief
