Learn more about choosing weapon lights

Weapon-mounted lights attach to compatible firearms and provide an integrated source of illumination. Models vary significantly in size, light output, beam pattern, mounting system, activation controls, battery type, runtime, environmental protection, and compatibility with specific firearm platforms.

Pistol Lights

Pistol lights are compact illumination systems designed for compatible handgun accessory rails. Because handgun rail dimensions, trigger-guard spacing, holster clearance, and mounting systems vary, verify fit for the exact firearm model before selecting a light.

Rifle-Mounted Lights

Rifle and carbine lights are available with direct mounts, rail-mounted interfaces, offset mounts, remote-switch compatibility, and different body and head configurations. Size, mounting position, beam characteristics, and control placement are important considerations.

Shotgun Weapon Lights

Compatible shotguns may use dedicated fore-end lights, rail-mounted lights, or other mounting systems. Verify firearm model, available mounting interface, recoil rating, and manufacturer compatibility before choosing an accessory.

Choosing a Weapon Light

  • Firearm Compatibility: Confirm that the light and mounting system fit the exact firearm, accessory rail, handguard, or mounting interface.
  • Light Output: Compare lumens together with candela, beam shape, hotspot, and spill rather than relying on a single output number.
  • Activation: Consider switches and controls that are compatible with the firearm configuration and intended mounting position.
  • Power Source: Compare disposable and rechargeable battery systems, expected runtime, availability, and charging requirements.

Lumens & Candela

Lumens describe total light output, while candela relates more closely to beam intensity in a particular direction. Two lights with similar lumen ratings may produce noticeably different beam patterns and useful illumination distances.

Flood vs. Focused Beam Patterns

Some weapon lights emphasize a broader flood pattern for illuminating a wider area, while others use a more concentrated hotspot for additional intensity at distance. Many designs balance both characteristics.

Momentary & Constant-On Controls

Depending on the model, controls may support momentary activation, constant-on operation, or both. Control layout, switch feel, and accessibility vary among pistol, rifle, and shotgun lighting systems.

Remote Pressure Switches

Some rifle-mounted lights support compatible remote switches that allow the activation control to be positioned separately from the light body. Switches, tailcaps, cables, and mounting accessories are often product-specific and should be verified for compatibility.

Weapon Light Mounts

Light mounts are available for Picatinny, M-LOK, KeyMod, and other compatible interfaces. Direct, offset, inline, and adjustable designs can position the light differently relative to the handguard or firearm.

Battery Type & Runtime

Runtime varies with output level, battery chemistry, temperature, light mode, and electronic regulation. Some models use common replaceable batteries while others incorporate rechargeable cells or support multiple power options.

Rechargeable Weapon Lights

Rechargeable models may use removable rechargeable cells, integrated batteries, magnetic charging systems, USB charging, or manufacturer-specific chargers. Check charging requirements, battery replacement options, and expected runtime.

Size, Weight & Balance

Weapon light size and weight can influence firearm handling, especially on compact handguns and lightweight rifles. Consider the complete mounted configuration rather than evaluating the light by itself.

Holster Compatibility

A pistol equipped with a weapon light may require a holster specifically designed for that firearm-and-light combination. Verify holster compatibility whenever adding or changing a mounted pistol light.

Weather Resistance & Durability

Weapon lights may be exposed to recoil, moisture, dust, temperature changes, and impact. Compare manufacturer specifications for water resistance, construction materials, recoil testing, operating temperature, and environmental rating.

Installation & Inspection

Follow the firearm and light manufacturers' instructions for mounting, hardware, battery installation, and adjustment. Periodically inspect the mount, fasteners, switches, battery compartment, lens, and housing for movement, wear, corrosion, or damage.
