Learn more about gun lubricants, solvents & cleaners

Firearm lubricants, solvents, cleaners, and protectants perform different jobs during routine maintenance. Some products are designed primarily to loosen fouling and residue, while others reduce friction, protect metal surfaces, or combine several functions into one formula.

Gun Oils & Firearm Lubricants

Gun oils and firearm lubricants are used on appropriate moving and bearing surfaces to reduce friction and help protect metal components. Application points and the amount of lubricant required vary by firearm design, operating system, environmental conditions, and manufacturer guidance.

Gun Solvents & Bore Cleaners

Firearm solvents and bore cleaners are formulated to help remove carbon, powder residue, fouling, oils, and other deposits. Specialized products may be intended for specific types of fouling or particular firearm-maintenance tasks.

CLP Products

CLP products combine cleaning, lubricating, and protecting functions in a single formula. They can be convenient for routine maintenance, field kits, range bags, and general firearm care where a multipurpose product is preferred.

Gun Grease & Protectants

Greases may be used on firearm components where a heavier, longer-lasting lubricant is appropriate. Corrosion protectants and rust-prevention products can help protect metal surfaces during storage or exposure to moisture and changing environmental conditions.

Choosing the Right Firearm Maintenance Product

  • Cleaning: Choose an appropriate cleaner or solvent for the type of fouling and firearm being serviced.
  • Lubrication: Use oils or greases only on locations recommended by the firearm manufacturer.
  • Protection: Consider corrosion-resistant products for firearms exposed to moisture, humidity, fingerprints, or extended storage.
  • Application: Aerosols, bottles, needle applicators, wipes, and precision applicators offer different levels of control and convenience.

Cleaning Different Firearm Surfaces

Firearms may contain blued steel, stainless steel, aluminum, polymer, wood, coatings, optics, and other materials. Verify that a cleaning product is appropriate for the surfaces it may contact and avoid prolonged exposure where the manufacturer recommends otherwise.

Storage & Handling

Store firearm cleaners, solvents, oils, and related chemicals according to their labels and keep containers properly closed when not in use. Use adequate ventilation where required and follow all manufacturer warnings, handling instructions, and disposal guidance.

Safe Firearm Maintenance

Confirm that the firearm is unloaded before cleaning or lubrication and remove live ammunition from the maintenance area. Follow firearm and maintenance-product manufacturer instructions throughout cleaning, lubrication, inspection, and reassembly.
