Learn more about choosing a red dot or reflex sight

Choosing a red dot or reflex sight starts with the firearm platform, optic footprint, mounting interface, window size, dot or reticle preference, battery system, durability, and whether the optic will be used on a pistol, rifle, shotgun, or other compatible platform.

Common Red Dot & Reflex Sight Types

  • Open Reflex Sights: Compact optics with an exposed emitter and open viewing window, commonly used on pistols, competition firearms, and lightweight setups.
  • Enclosed-Emitter Sights: Optics that protect the emitter inside a sealed housing, helping shield it from dirt, moisture, debris, and environmental exposure.
  • Micro Red Dots: Smaller, lighter optics designed for compact pistols, offset mounts, backup use, and lightweight firearm configurations.
  • Full-Size Red Dots: Larger optic housings that can provide a wider viewing window, larger controls, and robust mounting options for rifles and shotguns.
  • Multi-Reticle Systems: Optics offering selectable dots, circles, or combined reticle patterns for different aiming preferences and applications.

Dot Size & Reticle Choice

Smaller dots can provide a finer aiming point, while larger dots can be quicker to see at close range. Circle-dot and multi-reticle systems can provide additional visual references. Choose a reticle based on target size, expected distance, eyesight, and shooting style.

Footprint & Mounting Compatibility

Verify the optic footprint, slide cut, adapter plate, rail mount, screw pattern, mounting height, and manufacturer recommendations before purchase. Similar-looking optics may use different footprints and are not automatically interchangeable.

Battery, Brightness & Durability

Consider battery life, battery access, automatic brightness, manual brightness settings, motion activation, night-vision settings, waterproofing, impact resistance, and operating temperature for the conditions in which the optic will be used.
