Learn more about gun cleaning rods, brushes & bore cleaners
Bore-cleaning tools are used to remove fouling, residue, debris, and excess lubricant from firearm barrels and chambers. Cleaning rods, brushes, patches, jags, mops, and pull-through systems each serve different roles in routine firearm maintenance.
Gun Cleaning Rods
Cleaning rods provide a rigid platform for pushing brushes, jags, patches, and other accessories through a firearm bore. Rods are available in different lengths, diameters, materials, and thread patterns for use with pistols, rifles, shotguns, and caliber-specific cleaning accessories.
Bore Brushes
Bore brushes help loosen carbon, powder residue, fouling, and other deposits from the inside of a barrel. Brush material, diameter, and thread type should match the firearm, bore size, cleaning rod, and intended maintenance procedure.
Cleaning Patches & Jags
Cleaning patches are commonly used to apply solvents, remove loosened residue, dry the bore, and apply a light protective coating where appropriate. Jags and patch holders help keep patches positioned against the bore surface during cleaning.
Bore Snakes & Pull-Through Cleaners
Bore snakes and flexible pull-through systems combine cleaning surfaces into a compact design that can be useful for quick maintenance at home, at the range, or in the field. Models are generally caliber- or gauge-specific.
Bore Mops, Swabs & Utility Brushes
Bore mops and swabs can be used for applying cleaner, removing residue, drying surfaces, or applying a light coating of lubricant or protectant. Utility brushes can help clean actions, bolts, slides, chambers, and other accessible firearm components.
Choosing the Right Cleaning Tools
- Caliber or Gauge: Match brushes, jags, mops, patches, and pull-through cleaners to the firearm's caliber or gauge.
- Rod Length: Use a cleaning rod long enough for the firearm's barrel and action without forcing or overextending the tool.
- Thread Compatibility: Confirm that brushes, jags, adapters, and rods use compatible thread sizes and connection systems.
- Cleaning Method: Choose between traditional rod-based systems, pull-through cleaners, or a combination based on the firearm and maintenance routine.
Protecting the Bore & Crown
Use correctly sized cleaning tools and follow the firearm manufacturer's recommended cleaning direction and procedure. Avoid forcing oversized brushes, jags, or patches through the bore, and use appropriate bore guides or protective accessories where recommended.
Safe Firearm Cleaning
Always verify that the firearm is unloaded before cleaning and remove live ammunition from the work area. Follow the firearm and cleaning-product manufacturer instructions for disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, inspection, and reassembly.
