Learn more about choosing air guns
Choosing an air gun starts with identifying the intended application, power system, caliber, velocity, action type, overall size, firearm weight, sights, optics compatibility, ammunition type, and the shooting distance at which the air gun will primarily be used.
Choosing an Air Gun Type
- Air Rifles: Available in break-barrel, PCP, CO2, pneumatic, and other configurations for target shooting, recreational use, training, pest control where lawful, and small-game hunting where permitted.
- Air Pistols: Compact air-powered handguns commonly used for target shooting, recreational use, training, and other sporting applications.
- PCP Air Guns: Pre-charged pneumatic models use compressed air stored in an onboard reservoir and are available in a wide range of power levels and configurations.
- CO2 Air Guns: Use replaceable or refillable carbon-dioxide cartridges or tanks and are common in recreational rifles, pistols, replicas, and target-oriented models.
- Break-Barrel Air Rifles: Use a hinged barrel or similar cocking system to compress a spring or gas ram before each shot and are popular for straightforward single-shot operation.
Caliber, Velocity and Intended Use
Common air-gun calibers include .177, .22, .25, and larger projectile sizes depending on the platform. Higher velocity does not automatically make an air gun better for every application; projectile weight, energy, accuracy, shooting distance, noise, recoil characteristics, and intended use should all be considered.
Pellets, BBs and Ammunition Compatibility
Air guns may be designed for pellets, BBs, slugs, or other compatible projectiles. Always use the ammunition type and caliber specified by the manufacturer. Pellet shape, weight, and construction can influence accuracy and performance in different air-gun platforms.
Sights and Optics
Many air guns use fixed or adjustable iron sights, while others include dovetail rails, Picatinny rails, or other mounting systems for compatible scopes and red dots. Confirm that any optic and mount are appropriate for the specific air-gun platform and recoil characteristics.
Air Gun Laws and Use
Air-gun ownership, possession, discharge, hunting use, age requirements, and local restrictions can vary by jurisdiction. Customers should review applicable state and local regulations before purchasing or using an air gun.
