Learn more about choosing hunting binoculars
Binoculars provide magnified viewing through two optical channels and are widely used for hunting, scouting, wildlife observation, range spotting, travel, and general outdoor use. Magnification, objective size, field of view, optical quality, weight, and weather resistance all affect how binoculars perform in the field.
Hunting Binoculars
Hunting binoculars are typically selected for a balance of optical clarity, magnification, low-light performance, size, durability, and carrying comfort. Terrain and hunting style can influence whether a compact or larger optic is preferred.
Understanding Binocular Numbers
Binocular specifications are commonly written as two numbers, such as 8x42 or 10x42. The first number represents magnification, while the second represents the objective-lens diameter in millimeters.
8x vs. 10x Binoculars
Lower magnification can provide a wider field of view and may be easier to hold steady, while higher magnification provides additional target detail. Neither is automatically better; the appropriate choice depends on distance, terrain, viewing conditions, and user preference.
Choosing Binoculars
- Magnification: Select enough magnification for the intended viewing distance without making the image unnecessarily difficult to hold steady.
- Objective Size: Larger objective lenses can gather more light but generally increase overall size and weight.
- Field of View: A wider field of view can make it easier to locate and follow moving animals or scan large areas.
- Weight & Size: Consider how the binoculars will be carried during long hunts, hikes, range sessions, or travel.
Compact Binoculars
Compact binoculars prioritize portability and lower weight. They can be useful for travel, day hikes, range bags, and situations where carrying space is limited, though smaller objective lenses may provide less low-light performance than larger designs.
Full-Size Binoculars
Full-size binoculars generally use larger objective lenses and may provide improved brightness and viewing comfort at the cost of additional size and weight. They are commonly selected for hunting, wildlife observation, and extended glassing sessions.
Low-Light Performance
Lens quality, objective diameter, coatings, optical design, and exit pupil all influence image brightness in reduced light. Hunters who frequently glass near dawn or dusk may place greater emphasis on low-light performance.
Lens Coatings & Optical Quality
Lens and prism coatings can influence light transmission, contrast, color quality, glare reduction, and overall image clarity. Manufacturer terminology varies, so compare complete optical specifications rather than relying on a single feature.
Roof Prism & Porro Prism Designs
Binoculars commonly use roof-prism or Porro-prism optical configurations. Roof-prism models are often slimmer and more compact, while Porro-prism designs use an offset optical path and may provide different handling and optical characteristics.
Eye Relief & Adjustable Eyecups
Eye relief determines how far the user's eye can be positioned from the eyepiece while maintaining the intended field of view. Adjustable eyecups can improve viewing comfort for users with and without eyeglasses.
Waterproofing & Fog Resistance
Outdoor binoculars may include sealed housings, internal gas purging, protective armor, and other features intended to improve resistance to moisture, fogging, dust, and changing temperatures.
Tripod Adaptability
Some binoculars can be attached to a tripod or support system using a compatible adapter. Supported viewing can reduce fatigue and image movement during extended glassing or use of higher-magnification optics.
Care & Storage
Keep lenses free of abrasive dirt before wiping and use cleaning products appropriate for optical coatings. Store binoculars dry and protected, and inspect eyecups, focus controls, straps, hinges, and lens surfaces periodically for wear or damage.
