Choosing iron sights starts with the firearm platform, mounting interface, sight height, front-and-rear compatibility, intended use, visibility, adjustability, and whether the sights will be used as the primary aiming system or as backups to an optic.

Common Iron Sight Types

• Fixed Sights: Rigid front and rear sights designed to remain in position for a simple and durable aiming setup.
• Folding Backup Sights: Sights that fold down when not needed and can be deployed as backups to red dots, prism optics, or other compatible sights.
• Adjustable Sights: Front or rear sights with windage, elevation, or other adjustment capability for refining point of impact.
• Fiber-Optic Sights: Sights using fiber-optic elements to provide a bright aiming reference in available light.
• Night Sights: Low-light sight systems using luminous or illuminated elements designed to improve sight visibility in reduced-light conditions.
• Suppressor-Height / Tall Sights: Taller sight sets intended for compatible pistols and setups requiring additional sight height, including some optic-equipped configurations.

Sight Height & Co-Witness

Front and rear sight height must be compatible with each other and with the firearm. On optic-equipped firearms, sight height can also determine whether the irons appear as an absolute, lower, or partial co-witness through the optic window.

Mounting & Platform Compatibility

Verify dovetail type, rail interface, mounting screw pattern, sight radius, firearm generation, barrel or slide configuration, and manufacturer fitment before purchase. Similar-looking sights are not necessarily interchangeable.

Visibility & Intended Use

Sight picture, notch width, front-post width, color, fiber optics, luminous inserts, and protective ears can affect how quickly and precisely the sights are acquired. Choose a setup based on the firearm and the shooting environment.
