Learn more about iron sights & backup sights
Iron sights provide a mechanical aiming system that does not depend on batteries or electronic illumination. They may serve as a firearm's primary sighting system or as backup sights used alongside a compatible red dot, prism optic, or other sight.
Backup Iron Sights
Backup iron sights, commonly called BUIS, are often installed alongside an electronic or optical sighting system. Depending on the firearm and optic configuration, they may remain fixed in position or fold down when not in use.
Flip-Up Sights
Flip-up front and rear sights fold into a lower-profile position when not required and can be raised when needed. Designs may use manual deployment, spring-assisted mechanisms, or other manufacturer-specific systems.
Fixed Iron Sights
Fixed sights remain in their operating position at all times. Their simple construction can provide a durable sighting system for rifles, carbines, shotguns, pistols, and other compatible platforms.
Front & Rear Sights
A complete iron-sight system normally combines a front sight with a compatible rear sight. Rear sights may use apertures, notches, or other sighting references, while front sights can use posts, blades, dots, or other designs.
Choosing Iron Sights
- Mounting Interface: Confirm compatibility with the firearm's rail, dovetail, slide, barrel, or manufacturer-specific mounting system.
- Sight Height: Front and rear sights must be designed to work together at compatible heights.
- Fixed vs. Folding: Choose between always-deployed fixed sights and folding designs based on available space and optic configuration.
- Material: Steel, aluminum, polymer, and hybrid construction provide different combinations of weight, durability, and cost.
Iron Sights with Red Dot Optics
Iron sights are often paired with compatible red dot or reflex optics. The relationship between the iron sights and optic window depends on sight height, optic height, mount height, firearm geometry, and the selected components.
Co-Witness Height
Some optic and sight combinations allow the iron sights to remain visible through the optic window. The amount of overlap can vary, so verify the actual sight and optic dimensions rather than assuming compatibility from a general mounting description.
Adjustable Sights
Iron sights may offer windage adjustment, elevation adjustment, or both. Adjustment method and range vary by sight design and firearm platform.
Night Sights & High-Visibility Inserts
Some mechanical sights incorporate fiber optics, contrasting inserts, photoluminescent materials, or tritium illumination to improve visibility under certain lighting conditions. Features vary by manufacturer and model.
Sight Sets vs. Individual Sights
Complete sight sets provide matched front and rear components, while individual sights can be useful when replacing or upgrading one component. Confirm height and platform compatibility when combining separately purchased sights.
Installation & Inspection
Follow firearm and sight manufacturer instructions for mounting, hardware, adjustment, and inspection. Periodically check sights and mounting hardware for looseness, movement, wear, or damage, and verify alignment after installation or service.
