Learn more about choosing optics and sights

Choosing an optic or sight starts with the firearm or platform, intended distance, field of view, magnification needs, reticle or dot preference, mounting interface, durability, weight, and lighting conditions.

Common Optic & Sight Types

  • Rifle Scopes: Fixed- and variable-magnification optics for hunting, target shooting, precision use, and general rifle applications.
  • Red Dot & Reflex Sights: Non-magnified electronic sights designed for fast target acquisition on pistols, rifles, shotguns, and compatible platforms.
  • Prism Optics: Compact optics with an etched reticle, often available with fixed magnification and illumination.
  • Magnifiers: Flip-to-side or fixed magnification units used behind compatible red dot or holographic-style sights.
  • Iron Sights: Fixed, adjustable, folding, and backup sight systems for compatible firearms.
  • Binoculars, Spotting Scopes & Rangefinders: Observation and distance-measuring optics for hunting, range use, scouting, and outdoor applications.

Magnification, Reticle & Field of View

Lower magnification can provide a wider field of view and faster target acquisition, while higher magnification can help with more distant targets and finer aiming. Reticle design, illumination, adjustment system, and focal-plane configuration should match the intended shooting style.

Mounts, Rings & Compatibility

Verify rail type, footprint, tube diameter, ring height, eye relief, mounting length, recoil rating, and manufacturer compatibility before installation. Correct mounting and torque are important for maintaining alignment and repeatable zero.

Durability & Environmental Use

Consider water resistance, fog resistance, lens coatings, impact resistance, battery life, operating temperature, and overall construction when choosing optics for hunting, field, duty, or frequent range use.
