Learn more about choosing bolt carrier groups
Choosing a bolt carrier group starts with confirming the firearm platform, cartridge, bolt face, carrier pattern, gas-system compatibility, firing-pin configuration, material, finish, and manufacturer specifications.
What Is a Bolt Carrier Group?
- Carrier: The main body of the assembly that moves within the upper receiver during the firearm's operating cycle and supports the bolt and related components.
- Bolt: Interfaces with the barrel extension and cartridge case. Bolt dimensions and bolt-face size must match the intended cartridge and compatible barrel extension.
- Gas Key: On direct-impingement AR systems, the gas key interfaces with the gas tube and directs operating gas into the carrier.
- Firing Pin: Located within the carrier assembly and designed to work with the firearm's compatible bolt, hammer, and fire-control system.
- Cam Pin and Retaining Pin: Help control bolt movement and retain internal carrier components during normal operation.
AR-15 Bolt Carrier Groups
AR-15 bolt carrier groups are available for numerous chamberings, including 5.56 NATO, .223 Remington, .300 Blackout, 6.5 Grendel, 6mm ARC, 7.62x39, .350 Legend, and other cartridges. Some chamberings can share carrier components while requiring a different bolt or bolt face, so exact compatibility should always be confirmed.
AR-10 / .308 Bolt Carrier Groups
Large-frame AR platforms use larger bolt carrier groups and may vary by receiver pattern, cartridge, barrel extension, firing-pin dimensions, and manufacturer. AR-10 and .308-pattern components are not universally interchangeable, making compatibility especially important.
BCG Materials and Finishes
Bolt carrier groups may use different steels, heat treatments, surface treatments, and coatings. Common finishes include phosphate, nitride, nickel-boron, hard chrome, DLC, and other manufacturer-specific coatings. Each finish can offer different characteristics related to corrosion resistance, cleaning, lubricity, appearance, and wear.
Full-Mass and Lightweight Carriers
Standard or full-mass carriers are common for general-purpose firearms, while lightweight carrier designs may be used in specialized or competition-oriented configurations. Carrier weight can affect the operating cycle and should be considered together with the gas system, buffer, spring, ammunition, and overall firearm setup.
Check Headspace and Compatibility
A bolt carrier group must be compatible with the barrel, cartridge, receiver, and operating system. When replacing major firearm components or assembling a firearm, follow manufacturer specifications and appropriate gunsmithing practices to confirm safe component fit and function.
