Learn more about choosing laser sights
Laser sights project a visible aiming reference and are available in firearm-specific and rail-mounted configurations for compatible handguns, rifles, carbines, shotguns, and other platforms. Products vary in beam color, housing size, mounting method, activation system, adjustment capability, battery type, and environmental durability.
Pistol Laser Sights
Pistol lasers may attach to an accessory rail, trigger-guard area, grip, or another firearm-specific location. Compact size and exact compatibility are important because frame dimensions, rail geometry, controls, and holster fit can differ between handgun models.
Rifle Laser Sights
Rifle and carbine lasers are commonly designed for compatible Picatinny, M-LOK, or other mounting systems. Available rail space, control placement, sights, lights, optics, and other accessories can influence where a laser can be positioned.
Red Laser Sights
Red lasers are widely available in compact and full-size designs and can provide a clearly visible reference under appropriate conditions. Apparent brightness depends on ambient light, target surface, output, distance, and the user's eyesight.
Green Laser Sights
Green lasers are often perceived as brighter by the human eye under many lighting conditions. Actual visibility still varies with output, surrounding light, target background, distance, atmospheric conditions, and the individual device.
Choosing a Laser Sight
- Firearm Compatibility: Verify the laser is designed for the exact firearm, frame, rail, grip, or mounting interface.
- Beam Color: Compare red and green visible laser systems according to expected lighting conditions and personal preference.
- Activation: Consider buttons, paddles, grip switches, pressure switches, or other control arrangements offered by compatible models.
- Battery System: Review battery type, replacement availability, expected runtime, and rechargeable options where applicable.
Rail-Mounted Laser Sights
Rail-mounted lasers attach to compatible firearm accessory rails using clamps or integrated mounting systems. Check rail type, available space, fastener requirements, and clearance with other installed accessories before selecting a model.
Trigger-Guard Laser Systems
Some compact lasers mount around or near the trigger-guard area. These designs are commonly firearm-specific, making exact make, model, frame size, and generation compatibility especially important.
Grip-Integrated Lasers
Grip-based laser systems incorporate the laser into a compatible grip or grip component. Depending on the design, activation may occur through pressure applied during a normal firing grip. Compatibility varies by firearm and grip configuration.
Combination Light & Laser Units
Some products combine a visible laser with an integrated weapon light. A combined housing can reduce the number of separate accessories mounted to a firearm, while output, beam color, controls, dimensions, and battery requirements vary by model.
Laser Visibility
Laser visibility is affected by ambient light, distance, target color and reflectivity, beam wavelength, output, weather, dust, fog, and other environmental factors. Advertised maximum visibility should not be treated as a fixed real-world distance.
Adjustment Features
Many laser sights include windage and elevation adjustment mechanisms. Adjustment design, range, locking method, and tools vary between products, so follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific device.
Activation Controls
Activation systems can include push buttons, paddles, switches, pressure pads, grip activation, and other designs. Controls should remain accessible without interfering with normal firearm controls or other mounted equipment.
Battery Life & Power
Battery runtime depends on laser output, beam color, electronic design, battery chemistry, temperature, and operating mode. Follow manufacturer recommendations for approved battery types and charging systems.
Holster Compatibility
Adding a laser sight to a handgun can change the firearm's external dimensions and may require a holster designed for the exact firearm-and-accessory combination. Verify fit before relying on an existing holster.
Laser Safety
Avoid directing a laser toward eyes, aircraft, vehicles, reflective hazards, or people who are not part of an appropriate and lawful activity. Follow all manufacturer safety instructions and applicable laws governing laser products.
Installation & Inspection
Follow the firearm and laser manufacturers' instructions for mounting, adjustment, battery installation, and maintenance. Periodically inspect the housing, mounting hardware, controls, lens, battery compartment, and attachment points for movement, corrosion, wear, or damage.
