Learn more about firearm cleaning and maintenance

Selecting maintenance products starts with the firearm type, caliber or gauge, manufacturer recommendations, maintenance task, materials being cleaned, required tools, workspace, and compatibility between the firearm’s finish and the selected cleaning products.

Choosing Maintenance Equipment

  • Cleaning mats: Provide an organized, non-marring work surface that helps contain oil, solvents, residue, tools, and small firearm components.
  • Cleaning kits: Complete and caliber-specific kits may include rods, brushes, jags, patches, cables, handles, picks, and storage cases for routine firearm cleaning.
  • Lubricants and solvents: Products for removing fouling, protecting metal surfaces, reducing friction, and supporting proper firearm operation according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Rods, brushes, patches, and bore snakes: Select bore-cleaning equipment by caliber or gauge, construction material, rod length, thread pattern, and intended cleaning method.
  • Bench, vise, and armorer tools: Browse blocks, vises, punches, hammers, wrenches, torque tools, and other equipment for supported maintenance and assembly tasks.
  • Repair and maintenance supplies: Find replacement consumables, applicators, organizers, protective products, and related supplies for routine care and inspection.
  • Bore sighters and arbors: Preliminary alignment tools that help place an optic closer to the firearm’s point of aim before final confirmation at the range.

Safe Firearm Maintenance

Before cleaning or maintenance, verify that the firearm is unloaded and remove ammunition from the work area. Use proper ventilation and follow all chemical, tool, and firearm manufacturer instructions. Confirm caliber, thread, material, and component compatibility before use. Repairs or adjustments beyond routine maintenance should be performed by a qualified gunsmith.
